Fractal speckles are speckles having fractal spatial intensity distribution expressed by a negative power-law correlation. In detecting such speckles, spatial integration effect is inevitable since they have speckle grains of various scales including very fine ones. To evaluate the smoothing effect of fractal speckles in the detection process, contrast of the integrated intensity is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the contrast reduction with the size of the detecting aperture follows a negative power function when the aperture is much larger than the minimum speckle size, and that the degree of the power-law decay depends on the scaling property of the speckle.
