The authors have recorded electroencephalograms (EEG) from subjects viewing Kanji (Chinese character being used currently in the Japanese language) that has the opposite meaning. Each pair of characters denote the opposite meaning such as a man and a woman, upward and downward, etc. Subjects were asked to read the characters silently. EEGs were averaged according to each stimulus, and event related potentials (ERPs) were obtained. The equivalent current dipole source localization (ECDL) method was applied to these ERPs. ECDs were localized to the hippocampus, the angular gyrus, The Broca's area and the prefrontal area in silent reading.
