(6)¡¡A METHOD OF SHAPE CLASSIFICATIONOF ASPARAGUS
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Proceedings of the IASTED International Conference, Intelligent Systems and Control,pp.161-164,1998-6.

In Japan, the grade of agricultural products is, in many cases, based on the product¡Çs degree of bend. Because of easiness of packing and customer preference, the degree of bend is reflected in the price of such curvature-prone vegetables as asparagus and cucumbers. Although this property has many aspects and a machine classification is not easily achievable, there is nevertheless an increasing demand for the automated grading of seasonal agricultural products. In order to classify the shapes of asparagus automatically, we applied the methods of fuzzy logic to determine the degree of curvature and a neural network to classify shapes of our chosen product, asparagus. Classification by this system resulted in a 93% agreement with the results of visual classification by experts.
